I’ve seen it countless times. A business owner puts off getting graphic design because running the company takes so much time, and suddenly he/she needs a brochure to send out to potential suppliers, or some other important group, right away. Now they are in a hurry to get a logo because they have to send out a brochure next week, and they can’t send it without a logo. So the business owner calls their designer and explains that they need a logo and brochure designed by next week.
This scenario will probably ring true with many designers, and it’s a habit that causes a lot of frustration and headaches for both designers and business owners. What many entrepreneurs forget is that the design process is not like putting together last quarter’s financial statements. Creative thinking is less clear-cut, is rarely perfect the first time and thus, takes more time than other business tasks.
Even though you can get great design quickly, as a business owner you’ll want to have time to review your concepts with others and plan for time to revise your design until it’s just right. Generally, designers don’t work as well when they know their client is pushing them hard to complete a project as they could if they are allowed to explore new concepts that could potentially help your company stand out from competitors.
If you avoid procrastination and start your design projects well in advance, you’ll probably end up with something you’re happy with and avoid a frustrating design experience as well.
